Obituary of Dudley Warren Maddox
Dudley Warren Maddox left this world peacefully on Thursday, August 26, 2021. Having lived his life as a faithful and dedicated follower of Christ, in the end, he met death as one meets a friend to embark upon an adventure together. In his own words, he was “excited to see what’s on the other side.”
Dudley grew up with his family in Atlanta, Georgia where he graduated from Walker High School in 1969. He loved his church family and made lifelong friends in his youth group. He enjoyed hot rods, scuba diving, and F.O.s from The Varsity. He attended Southern Polytechnic University, where he studied architecture and DJ’d at the college radio station. His encyclopedic knowledge and love of music were interwoven into the fabric of his being and inspired all who knew him.
Dudley lived his life as a builder. By trade, he worked in construction; it is hard to drive around Alabama, Florida or Georgia and not find a bank or church that he did not have a hand in building. However, Dudley also spent his life building relationships, hearts, and minds. He was a natural born teacher who exhibited patience, understanding, and unfailing guidance especially to young children and teenagers. Above all, Dudley embodied love to all he met. He saw only the best in others, and thereby inspired them to be their best.
Dudley never met a stranger. He lived by the ideology that the next person you meet might be your new best friend. He became everyone’s dad and everyone’s Paw Paw. Kevin Bacon might need six degrees of separation, but we always found that Dudley only needed two. He is known for making everybody feel like somebody.
Dudley also never met a joke, funny story, or tall tale that he could resist. He was the textbook definition of gregarious whose presence took up an entire room. He especially enjoyed regaling his listeners with stories and adventures he shared with his brothers and many cousins. His booming voice and contagious laughter will forever ring out in the memories of all who were privileged to hear him. In addition to his charismatic, humorous nature, Dudley was an introspective, caring man. He sought justice, rooted for the underdog, and shared with those in need.
He is survived by his two children, whom he loved more than life itself: his son Chris (Mary), and his daughter Jennifer. He also leaves behind his four grandsons, whom he loved even more: Caden, Gentry, Rylan, and Shep. He was forever loyal to his brothers, of whom survive, Jim and David (Cherie) of Ellijay, GA and his sister-in-law, Sheila Maddox of McDonough, GA.
Dudley is preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Snookie Maddox and his brother, Ronny Maddox.
