William Starley, Jr

Obituary of William Harell Starley, Jr

William “Bill” Harrell Starley, Jr, age 65 of Ellijay, GA, passed on Sunday, October 24, 2021. He was born December 11, 1955 to his parents William Harrell Starley, Sr and Rubye Carolyn (Butler) Starley in Dublin, GA.  Bill had a 38 year career with Norfolk Southern as both a Conductor and an Engineer. Many of his coworkers just knew him as “Wild Bill” in those days. The tenure of his service was a great example of his consistency and commitment. He was proud of his work at Norfolk Southern but mostly thankful for the people he was able to work alongside for all those years.  He was a man naturally gifted with trades of the hand, like woodworking. He could fix just about anything (or so it seemed to those who loved him). He was a hard worker who brought a “can do” attitude to any project he took on. That “can do” attitude even helped him remain a loyal fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, through both the good and bad years. It also kept him passionate about golf, even when he didn’t think he was all that good. He still loved it! Bill loved his family more than just about anything other than Jesus. He was a loyal father, grandfather, son, sibling, uncle, and cousin. He would drop anything to be there for a family member in need, regardless of where they fell in the family tree. He was committed to the family God had placed him in – both near and far. These last few years, he was able to spend a significant amount of time investing in his youngest grandchildren – who will always remember their Papa. Most of all, he loved his wife, Sherry (who he affectionately referred to as “Sweetie Pie”), and was enjoying his retirement with her in Ellijay. In his final years he pursued Jesus with an obviously growing faith. Bill was a committed partner at The Orchard Church and his love of his church led him to say “yes” to things that stretched him beyond his natural gifting. The Orchard Church recognized his servant heart and spiritual maturity when they recently named him Lead Deacon. He deeply enjoyed the community he built through his life groups and men’s Bible group. The people in those groups certainly helped Bill persevere to the end as he moved toward the reward he has now received in full in the presence of Jesus.  Bill is preceded in death by his son William Harrell (Trey) Starley, III, Father William Harrell (Frog) Starley, Sr, and brother-in-law Kent Proctor. Survivors include his loving wife of 22 years Sherry Dianne (Exum) Starley, Ellijay, GA, daughter Tonya Starley, Macon, GA, bonus children Jonathan (Ashley) Goode, Atlanta, GA, Michael (Jennifer) Goode, Athens, GA, Mother Carolyn B. Starley, Macon, GA, sister Cindy (James) Bazemore, Macon, GA, Janet Proctor, Macon, GA, brother Jimmy (Laurie) Starley, Bolingbroke, GA, grandchildren Corey Gaultney, Landon Almeida, Max Goode, Charlie Goode, George Goode, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A Celebration of Life will be held 2:30PM, Saturday, October 30, 2021 at The Orchard Church (7288 SR-515N, Ellijay, GA), with Pastor Steve Dusek officiating and music by Jeff Parker.
