Major Mary Ellen Cunningham, Retired Salvation Army, age 91, was Promoted to Glory on February 20, 2018 at Parkside Ellijay Skilled Nursing Home.
Mary Ellen was born on January 20, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois, and at the age of two moved along with her family to Atlanta, Georgia. Mary Ellen attended schools in Atlanta and entered the Southern Territorial Training College for Salvation Army Officers in 1947, and in June of 1948 was commissioned as a Probationary Lieutenant. Her first appointments were in various states within the Southeast. Later she served in various divisional headquarters throughout the Southeast. Twenty-five years of her officership was spent on the staff of the Salvation Army’s Georgia Divisional Headquarters. She retired from her appointment as Secretary to the Divisional Commander in 1992.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Vincent de Paul Cunningham and Nellie Ellis Cunningham; brothers, Vincent de Paul Cunningham, Jr., William F. Cunningham, and John E. Cunningham; sisters, Elisabeth J. Cunningham, Ruth V. Satterfield, and Dorothy J. Bowen. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews and many friends.
Graveside services will be held at 1pm on Monday, February 26th, 2018 from the Westview Cemetery.
