Obituary of Catherine Waters

Catherine Osborn Waters

Catherine Osborn Waters died on September 6, 2018, at her home in Ellijay.  She was born on September 26, 1926, at Dyke, Georgia on Clear Creek Road in Gilmer County to Charles Lesley “Less”  and Bessie Simmons Osborn.  She grew up in a happy home with her parents, Lesley and Bessie, sister Virginia, uncle and aunt, James “Jim” Osborn (her father’s brother) and Emma Simmons (her mother’s sister), and their children (and Catherine’s double first cousins), James and Charmet Osborn.

After surviving rheumatic fever as a child, she missed over a year of school and had to relearn to walk.  As a consequence of that illness, she was grateful for every day of the rest of her life.  She graduated from Ellijay High School in 1945 and from North Georgia College in 1947 with a two-year degree in accounting.

She married Charlie C. Waters on October 16, 1954 in a private ceremony and moved to the Tails Creek area of Ellijay.  She worked as a bookkeeper at Watkins Memorial Hospital as a young woman, and then worked side by side with Charlie at Red Dot and Thriftown grocery stores doing bookkeeping, as a cashier, and whatever else needed to be done.

Attending both the Cartecay United Methodist Church, the church of her mother and aunt, and Clear Creek Baptist Church, the church of her father and uncle, she joined Clear Creek Baptist as a young girl and transferred her letter to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church after her marriage to Charlie.  She lived her life as a Christian in service to others, always thinking of others first, seeing the best in those she knew, and never speaking negatively about others.  She was considerate, graceful, and had impeccable manners.  Catherine had an innate concern for others and took care of many family members in their last years.  Catherine gave service even when it was challenging for her, as in teaching Sunday School to prisoners in the Gilmer County Jail.  She would often quietly disappear from large family dinners at the end of the meal, and her family would find her washing dishes before anyone else had a chance.  For over fifty years she got up early to make whole wheat biscuits for Charlie and his mother, Canzady Withrow Waters, and she often made caramel or black walnut cakes to take to her parents.   Catherine had a dry sense of humor, and almost every conversation involved a funny story or a joke.  She liked making others laugh.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Charlie C. Waters, parents, Less and Bessie Osborn, aunt and uncle Jim and Emma Osborn, sister Virginia Osborn Mayes and her husband Joe Mayes, mother-in-law Canzady Waters, double-first cousin, James Osborn and his wife Sybil, her cousin Charmet’s husband Charles Garrett, sister-in-law Sue Waters Miller, sister-in-law Mary Waters Douthit and her husband Burley J., and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, and family members.

Surviving Catherine are double first cousin Charmet Garrett, brother-n-law Rev. Edmund Miller and his wife Jeanne; nieces and their spouses, Mitzi Miller and Mark Miller, Cathie Mayes Hudson and Hugh Hudson, Mary Mayes and Tommy Jordan; special family members Yvette Osborn Westbrook, Cindy Osborn Brockington, Mike Garrett and his wife Vickie, Mark Garrett and his wife Mindy; great nephews Charles Lesley Jordan and his wife Katherine Ann, Ben Jordan, and special family Erin Osborn Johnson and her husband Chris, Ansley Garrett, Wes Garrett and his wife Shelley, Ben Garrett and his wife Michele, Anna Garrett and great-great-nephews and nieces James Jordan, Anna Grace Jordan, cousins Ada Johnson, Stephen, Savannah, Shylan Garrett, Eason Lago, and several cousins.

The family is especially grateful for the loving care of Linda Garland, Mary Henson, Lee Sales, Trudy Williams, and Donna McCall for both Charlie and Catherine.
